Don’t develop reserve

8/08/2008 1:03:00 PM
THE Parks and Reserves Port Lincoln group will write to the Port Lincoln City Council asking it not to develop the reserve between Altair Crescent and Follett Street because it is the only natural green space left in the area.

The council has signed a heads of agreement with Housing Minster Jay Weatherill to use the site for affordable housing, but the proposal would have to go to public consultation before a final decision is made about the housing development.

The group recently visited the site and members unanimously agreed it should be left as it is.

Chairman Merrick Savage said the group supported the concept of affordable, low energy and resource use housing, and was aware of the shortage of available land, but members felt it should be built in a more appropriate location.

Mr Savage said other developments close by would leave the reserve as the only remaining green space in that part of the city.

“The reserve is highly valued by local residents for its native vegetation, bird life and for the open space and playground areas.”

Mr Savage said a caretaker group of local residents had helped to manage the reserve for many years. Parks and Reserves Port Lincoln encourages community ownership of open space areas and will endeavor to assist with long term management.
