CONSIDER other options before closing Marina Drive is the plea from some Port Lincoln residents.
Public consultation for the proposed road closure opened last week and is open until the close of business on Thursday, September 4.
Marina developer Lincoln Lakes Development Company has lodged a proposal to close part of Marina Drive to allow the next stage of development at the marina.
The road would be cut off between St Andrews Drive and Stamford Terrace to allow boat access by water through to the next section of residential development on the south side of Marina Drive.
An alternative road would be built between Windsor Avenue and St Andrews Drive.
Rosa Fitzgerald and her family will be affected by the road closure when they move into the house they are building later this year.
Concerned it would add an extra two or three kilometres to a trip and about the high volume of commercial and residential traffic, Mrs Fitzgerald would like the developers to come up with two options.
“I would rather see them entertain the thought of a bridge; I’m assuming they have not done that because of the cost.
“There needs to be more than one way in or out too.
“If this did go ahead I definitely would like to see a very wide shared walkway and bikeway off the road.
Mrs Fitzgerald suggested the bridge could be an open-close bridge, with a traffic volume survey to establish peak times, determining when it should be open and closed.
She said the road closure would put more pressure on the Verran Terrace and Mortlock Terrace intersection, with people likely to drive along Coronation Street.
“I do not think the other roads are going to handle it unless they are going to change something.”
Port Lincoln resident Ib Svane said traffic from the proposed retirement village would also be an issue.
He was also concerned the road would further isolate the marina from Port Lincoln and that fishing and aquaculture companies would find the road closure difficult.
Along with more people living at the marina because of the development, the new Lutheran school would also add to the problem.
In a report to the Port Lincoln City Council, director of operations Geoff Dodd said the largest impact would be on Stamford Terrace, which would see traffic volumes almost triple from 2800 to 8200 vehicles a day, and increased travel distances for existing residents in the marina area.
Mrs Fitzgerald said the road closure would inconvenience children who rode their bikes to school or Ravendale, and those people who walked to the Port Lincoln Leisure Centre.
“You are going to have trucks rolling through a residential area. The noise of trucks right through a residential area, and they start well before the sun is up.”
A public meeting will follow the consultation period before the Port Lincoln City Council considers all submissions and makes a final request to the surveyor general, who would have to approve the closure.
Submissions can be made to the City of Port Lincoln, PO Box 1787, Port Lincoln SA 5606.
