Time to remember

15/08/2008 11:48:00 AM
A COMMEMORATIVE service will be held in Port Lincoln on Monday for Vietnam Veterans Day, which is also known as Long Tan Day.

The service will begin at 11am at the Eyre Park war memorial.

Port Lincoln Salvation Army captain Scott Norman will conduct the service, Port Lincoln RSL sub branch president Garry Johnston will speak, and a wreath laying ceremony will take place.

The four people from Port Lincoln that died during the Vietnam war were Trooper H. Carlyle, Sergeant D.A. Baker, Private R.D. Hood and Lance Corporal K.L. Mitchinson.

Deanie Roach, who still lives in Port Lincoln, remembers sending South Australian beer – a special request – to her brother, Trooper Hugh Carlyle, when he had his 21st birthday in Vietnam.

Mr Carlyle joined the regular army when he was 18 and trained to be an armoured personnel carrier driver.

He was in Vietnam from 1969 to 1970, as part of the third cavalry regiment squadron B.

In December, 1969 he turned 21 and he was killed in action on February 18, 1970.

Mrs Roach’s daughter Ann-Marie carried her uncle’s flag in a parade to dedicate the Canberra Vietnam War Memorial in 1992.

Mrs Roach was also invited as a special guest to the unveiling and dedication of the Vietnam War Memorial in Adelaide in 2006.

Long Tan Day acknowledges the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan, which took place on August 18, 1966.

The Port Lincoln RSL clubrooms will be open after the service.
