PAIGE Murphy, 14, made history on Saturday as the youngest person in Port Lincoln to achieve her National C Grade umpiring badge.
Paige officially commenced umpiring two years ago as a 12-year-old after umpiring at her club’s trainings since she was eight.
She entered the green t-shirt program under Julie Williamson and was quickly found to have a talented eye for umpiring.
She started umpiring junior grades and was rewarded in her first year with a semi final berth.
Last season saw her advance her umpiring skills by umpiring much higher grades and was one of Port Lincoln’s umpiring representatives at the Pedler Cup.
After two years in the green t-shirt program, Paige entered into the Eyre Regional Academy under Gabby Leschen, who is the head umpire for the region.
This year Paige has umpired at Port Pirie for the Spencer Gulf Carnival and also travelled to Adelaide for the regional competitions that were held in July.
She was mentored by a number of national badged umpires and was told she had a rare talent for a person so young and was the package they looked for in an umpire.
Paige has also this season stared umpiring A1 reserves and in the last three weeks been umpiring at the A1 level, earning the respect of many of the A1 players.
She joins her mother Maryann who also has her C badge and they have become the first mother/daughter combination to achieve this level for the Port Lincoln association.
Paige plays and umpires each week for the Coles Netball Club.
The C badge is classed as a beginners badge into the national program, which can see these achievers get higher levels right up to AA status.
Port Lincoln has a very good number of C and B badged umpires and is regarded as one of the lucky associations.
