THE Port Lincoln eight-ball season wrapped up July 17 with both the division one and two grand finals going to a deciding frame.

Division one

Croatia had been the top team all year and went into the final as favourite against the Tasman Ball Breakers, who were going for their first premiership.

In a close first set of games, with a few nervy shots played by both teams, Croatia held a narrow 3-2, lead but it was in the second set where they made their move, winning four frames to one, and taking a 6-4 lead into the last set of five.

Mate Little continued his great season keeping the Ball Breakers alive then Aldo Kolega won his third game of the night to put Croatia just one frame away from the win and a 7-5 lead.

Ball Breakers’ captain Craig Reidy fought hard to keep them alive but when Paul McDonald won the next, scores were tied 7-7, and it was down to Bob Sherry for Croatia and David Reidy for the Ball Breakers.

Both played well and when Reidy potted a long ball to set up the black it was all over with the Tasman Ball Breakers winning their first premiership 8-7.

Division two

Mallee Park had great form leading into the final and deserved to be favourites against a courageous Pier Hotel team that had won through to the final by taking their semi 8-6, and then the preliminary final 8-7.

Mallee Park won the first two games before the Pier levelled the scores, and at the end of the first set Mallee Park led 3-2.

The second set of games went the same as the first with Mallee Park taking the round 3-2 and led 6-4 going into the last round.

Chris Szegeti won for the Pier before Neville Payne won for Mallee Park and put them within one frame of victory.

Mario Piantadosi and Theresia Davies won for the Pier to level the scores.

The decider was between Fabian Davey (Mallee Park) and Geoff Foster (Pier Hotel) who had the chance to be his teams’ hero for the second time in a week.

In a dour struggle, Davey ended up winning the night and premiership for Mallee Park.

The night was completed with the presentation of trophies to the best players for the year.

Congratulations to Mate Little (Tasman Ball Breakers) for winning the Poss Davis Trophy for the best player in division one and the knock out championship, also to Mike Bradford (Tumby Snappers) for being runner-up and winning the best percentage trophy in division one.

In division two Leon Duns (South Coast Fine Cuts) took the best player award while Richard Jones (Mallee Park) was runner up and took the best percentage trophy.

The next big event for the Port Lincoln Eight-Ball Association is over the long weekend when it hosts the Eyre Peninsula Carnival.

Anyone that can help with the organising of this event, please come to the Lincoln South Club at 7:30pm on Tuesday, August 5.
