Kinlough Cup
THE 42nd annual Kinlough Cup will be hosted by Great Flinders in Lock on Saturday, July 5.
Footballers from six associations, Far West, Mid West, Eastern Eyre, Great Flinders, Port Lincoln (Lincoln City and Lincoln Districts) and Whyalla, will play for the championship cups.
The Kinlough Cup is a showcase of under 17 footballers and over the 42-year history, many teenagers started their football careers with either the SANFL or AFL in this carnival.
The Kinlough Cup was conceived to foster senior colts football on Eyre Peninsula.
The first carnival was played in July 1959 with teams competing from Great Flinders, Eastern Eyre, Cleve and the Port Lincoln leagues.
Great Flinders has been Kinlough Cup champions 12 times since the inception of this competition and in 2007 Great Flinders was again victorious.
Local footballer Kerran ‘Gus’ Glover, will officially open the Kinlough Cup.
Kerran has played all his junior and senior football with Lock and represented Great Flinders numerous times.
He started playing football at seven. He then played senior colts until 14 and a half, when he started playing A grade for Lock.
He has won several club best and fairests, leading goal kicker, played in two back to back premierships in 1996 and 1997, has been captain and coached A grade and colts.
He has represented Great Flinders many times throughout his career, including two years in the Port Adelaide Cup, two years in Kinlough Cup, won colts best and fairest, has played A grade for Great Flinders since he was 16, won best under 21, numerous leading goal kickers awards, was Mail Medallist in 1997, and made a Great Flinders life member in 2005.
He has represented Eyre Peninsula, was captain of the under 17s, vice-captain of the western zone side and played senior Eyre Peninsula football for seven years and Mortlock Shield for 16, and was awarded life membership in 2005.
The opening ceremony will start at 12.40pm in front of the Lock clubrooms.
The first game of football will be played at 9am between Far West and Mid West.
Each association will play two games and the grand final will be played at 3.45pm.
The two top ranked sides contesting for the major trophy will be decided on points and percentage.
Gates will open at 7.30am and the entrance fee is $5 for adults, $3 for pensioners and $1 for children.
