PORT Lincoln Bowlers Kym Wakefield, Graham Schaedel and Geoff Lehmann played in the Australian Police Lawn Bowlers team against the Hong Kong Police Lawn Bowlers in a international tournament in Hong Kong in June.

On the Monday a fours tournament was played. Kym Wakefield and Graham Schaedel’s rinks both were involved in good wins for Australia.

The Australian side went on to win this day overall, the scores three rinks each, but Australia won by 10 shots overall. The day’s event was followed by a 12-course dinner at the Hong Kong Police Officers Club.

On Tuesday inclement weather meant only one match of the first day of triples could be played before the day was eventually called off. While Australia did not fare that well Geoff Lehmann’s rink had a good win.

On Wednesday the Australia versus Hong Kong Cathay Pacific Challenge Match was played and it proved to be a titanic struggle for both sides. Wakefield was soundly beaten, Schaedel’s rink, after holding a good lead, managed to hang on to win.

Australia won on the last bowl of the match four rinks to two and won the Cathay Pacific Trophy.

On Thursday the second round of triples was played, including catch up matches from the washed-out Tuesday games.

Australia was soundly beaten overall in this event by a strong Hong Kong contingent, however the rink including Geoff Lehmann was the shining light, proving to be the top rink in the triples with four wins and two losses.

Friday was a fun day where Australian and Hong Kong players were mixed together and played each other. A lot of laughs were had with communication proving difficult at times.

The day and tournament concluded with a barbecue and trophy presentation at the Police Club.

The carnival proved very successful for Australia, winning the Cathay Pacific Trophy in the challenge match and also the trophy for overall winner of the carnival.

The Hong Kong Police Bowlers were fantastic hosts looking after the players extremely well.

They were very strong competitors, boasting at least two players representing the Hong Kong national team.

Weather conditions proved to be difficult with temperatures around 30 degrees and humidity around 90 per cent.
