THE Port Lincoln Gymnastics Club bought home six overall trophies and eight gold medals, eight silver and six bronze from the annual Port Pirie regional tournament.

The team of 11 boys and 14 girls travel to Port Pirie to compete on July 18 and 19 against teams from Whyalla, Port Pirie, Cummins, Seacliff, Barossa Valley, Victor Harbour and Adelaide.

This is the second year Port Pirie has included men’s artistic gymnastics in the program.

The boys competed on four apparatus, starting on floor, vault, parallel bars and high bar.

In Level 1 Brodee McMahon and Ben Fulton received second and third overall trophies respectively.

In Level 2, Sam Fulton and Michael Balek also received second and third overall trophies.

The city clubs are always tough competition for the Port Lincoln boys, who only train one and a half hours per week.

They have done their club proud also being presented with 21 ribbons in total for fourth, fifth and sixth placings.

It was an early start on Saturday morning for the girls in Level 2C with Matilda Bartlett vaulting her way into second place, while Breanne Bryde competed consistently, gaining seventh place overall.

In Level 3C, Ebony Miller shone through, winning first place on uneven bars and the floor, adding to this sixth place on vault and balance beam to gain third overall.

Another well deserved placing was third on beam to Montana Grant-Cook; this was her last competition in this division, now upgrading to Level 4 alongside team-mates Chantelle Boxer and Eloise Freeburn.

Marni Murphy placed third on floor in Level 3B and achieved sixth overall position, and is also upgrading to Level 4.

Level 4A national gymnasts are in a whole new league, competing against the metropolitan clubs who train up to 10 hours per week.

Port Lincoln gymnasts train three hours per week and it is a credit to them to still be competitive in Statewide carnivals.

Kodi Mundy was the highest scorer for Port Lincoln in Level 4, gaining second place on floor, sixth on uneven bars and 10th overall.

Melissa Balek produced an awesome beam routine, unfortunately her front salto dismount landed incorrectly and this 0.8 deduction took her out of medal contention, finally placing ninth.

Cheyenne Donaghey, Port Lincoln’s only Level 5C gymnast, successfully placed first on floor, second on beam, third on vault and bars, and third overall.

These results certainly reflect on the gymnasts training and ability to compete individually and as part of a team.

But without coaches, there would be no team or the chance to compete at all.

These coaches have been volunteering their time through school holidays to coach and refine techniques and routines to bring the gymnasts to a competitive standard.

Congratulations to gymnasts and coaches, an outstanding achievement.
