RAMBLERS overcame a sluggish start to run over cross town rivals Cummins/Kapinnie to the tune of 67 points on Saturday.
Both teams experienced plenty of player turnover from last weekend’s games with the most noticeable absentee that of Magpie coach Simon Pedler; in his absence, it was up to assistant coach Hamish Ward.
Cougars’ chief Corey Turnbull won the toss and elected to kick north with the aid of a slight one to two goal southerly.
The match started hard and fast with the ball flying down the ground before AJ Crettenden got on the end of some good Rambler movement for the corner.
Luke Moroney, providing the option across half forward, replied quickly for the Cougars.
Tysan Mickan, fresh from visiting the Pope, was prominent early, setting up numerous forward forays from half back. His Leigh Matthews like attack on the northern right behind post also left it very much the worst for wear.
Ramblers were dominating into the wind, having the ball locked in their forward for the majority but failing to capitalise on the scoreboard.
Matt Mullan, who was lively up forward, finally broke the scoring drought to give Cougars the lead, but Rowan McDonald answered quickly to have the match all tied up at quarter time, 2-1 to 2-1.
Moroney opened the scoring in the second term as Cougars controlled early play with Dale Bache and Colin Mullan creative.
Mark Richardson then kicked his first and second and his presence up forward was presenting a problem for the younger, smaller Cougar backline.
James Minhard was once again on top in the ruck though Cougars were squaring the clearances.
Corey Turnbull, who was enjoying a great match up against Scott Blacker, kicked a much needed steadier and when Moroney kicked his third, much of the Maggies’ earlier hard work had been undone.
Ramblers went into the half time break up 6-2 to 5-4, with T. Mickan, Barker and Minhard the stand outs, and C. Turnbull, Bache, Kent Pringle and the Mullan boys Cougars’ best.
Ramblers were down to 18 to start the third with Michael Minhard and Daniel Parsons succumbing to hamstring injuries.
Coach Ward was not pleased with the Maggies’ intensity and with his instructions to move the ball quickly still ringing in the players ears, the Pies looked much better.
Blacker sharked everything that Minhard put his way from the ruck to dominate the clearances, resulting in McDonald’s second.
Shawn Fitzgerald, with a fresh new haircut, scored his first for the afternoon and when L. Fitzgerald kicked his second to follow Richardson’s fourth, Ramblers were well on top and looking a completely different team.
A rumble on the eastern wing resulted in Olsson obtaining a yellow card and an opportunity to cool his jets.
To Cougars’ credit they scored three quick goals, two from Craig Meaney, to give themselves a slight chance at three quarter time as they trailed 8-6 to 12-6.
A comeback was put to bed early in the last with Pilgrim kicking his second and Richardson his fifth before Spider Minhard went forward and nailed his first for the year from a contested mark.
Adam Haarsma took a great mark over good buddy Bache, but failed to capitalise a couple of easy shots on goal.
The Maggies ran out strongly with goals to McDonald, his third, Richardson, his sixth and Pilgrim to cap off a good game across half forward.
It was a pleasing second half performance from Ramblers, lifting their intensity and urgency after a lacklustre first half to run out comfortable winners, with some fine talent still to return.
Cougars were dogged and gave their all but were undermanned and will look forward to getting some good players back.
For the winners, T. Mickan was excellent and demonstrated an attack on ball and body that is second to none. Blacker continued his awesome form and his work at the clearances had to be seen to be believed, while J. Minhard had another fantastic day in the ruck.
For Cougars, C. Turnbull tried hard for the four quarters and Bache and C. Mullan were creative.
