Great Flinders table tennis
YEELANNA, with three consecutive wins in Great Flinders table tennis, are playing well at the right time of the season.
Last week they met top side Wanilla and fought out a tight contest to snatch victory by two rubbers and now move up to be on the same number of points as their opponents, and are separated by percentage at the top of the ladder.
Karkoo, who were just out of the top four, also made a bid for a spot in the finals, beating Yallunda Flat.
These two teams, with Tumby Bay, who had the bye this week, are now all on six wins, so it looks like percentage could well be the decider when it comes to the finals, with four minor rounds to be played.
Wanilla 14 rubbers 57 games lost to Yeelanna 16 rubbers 59 games
The first round of singles was all Yeelanna and this proved to be where they gained the advantage.
Yeelanna won seven singles, with Matt McLachlan, Troy Phillips and June Leeham taking their five setters.
From then on Wanilla fought back as they pegged back Yeelanna’s lead.
They won three doubles and then took it right up to Yeelanna in the second round of singles, as each side won five, after Yeelanna won the first four.
It came down to the tiered doubles with both sides in with a chance.
Lester Barnes and Greg Hurrell took the first one for Yeelanna before Rob McFarlane and Leanne O’Connor, and Ryan Mann and Ernie Bauer each won theirs, with Yeelanna needing one more to secure a victory.
Roy Modra and Adrian Glover took them over the line in five sets against Matt Packer and Ross Pope. Wanilla’s Hayden McFarlane and Deidre Mann took the final rubber.
Lester Barnes was undefeated for Yeelanna, well supported by Matt and Geoff McLachlan and Adrian Glover winning both singles and a double.
For Wanilla, Leanne O’Connor won her four rubbers, with Heather Pope successful in two singles and one double.
Karkoo 21 rubbers 75 games defeated Yallunda Flat 9 rubbers 33 games
Karkoo got off to a flyer and did not let Yallunda Flat back into the contest.
They won the first eight rubbers, before Yallunda Flat finished the round, with Lorraine Dunn, who was undefeated for the night, and Andrew Bates, winning the last two. Andrew Bates also won his two doubles.
Karkoo dominated the doubles and the next round of singles, winning six, but were made to work for their success, as Yallunda Flat’s Gus Elliott, Lisa Fitzgerald and Carmel Sheehan won the three five setters.
Karkoo were best served by Neil Carr, Vicki Mundy and Brian Proctor, who each won their four rubbers, with Rodney Pearson and Malcolm Hancock each taking both singles and a double.
Edillilie 23 rubbers 76 games defeated Cummins 7 rubbers 34 games
This was the meeting of the two sides that will be unlikely to play in the finals.
Edillilie made their intentions clear from the start, taking all 10 opening singles and followed this up with four doubles.
But Cummins were more competitive in the second round of singles. Carolyn Miller and Jayden Harris took both five setters for Cummins, when they matched their opponents with five rubbers each.
Edillilie again won four tiered doubles to end up with 23 rubbers 76 games to 7 rubbers 34 games.
Darren Smith, Dion Anderson, Shaun Clements and Kerry Rohrlach were all undefeated for Edillilie, while for Cummins, their number one player, Jarrad Hill, won one of his singles and a double.
