ORMER AFL and SANFL footballer Martin Leslie is looking forward to putting the finishing touches on the Boston Football Club A grade team this year, as the club’s new senior coach.
Leslie will come into the club after its first finals appearance in several years and he is keen to build on this season’s success.
“They’re on the brink of some success.
“After seven years in the wilderness, last year, under Brian (Ramsey), they started to show some promise.
“It will be nice to put some finishing touches on that.”
He said it was a very hard choice between Bostons and a coaching position at another club, but in the end he thought Bostons were “a bit further along”.
Vice president Doug McFarlane said Leslie had a wealth of experience both as a player and a coach that he could bring to the club.
Mr McFarlane said he had been highly recommended by former coach Brian Ramsey, who was happy to step aside for someone of Leslie’s calibre.
“We obviously impressed him with our interview and he certainly impressed us,” Mr McFarlane said.
He said Leslie was part of the club’s plan to continue to improve.
“The club in general is still moving forward, we’re not resting on our laurels.”
Leslie played 107 AFL games for Brisbane and was well-known as a Port Adelaide Magpies player in the SANFL.
He coached in the Barossa for three years before moving to Port Lincoln in January 2006 and coaching United Yeelanna Football Club’s A grade in 2006 and 2007.
